Former North Carolina Medical Society President Dr. Devdutta Sangvai Tapped by Governor-Elect Josh Stein to Lead NC DHHS

RALEIGH — Governor-elect Josh Stein unveiled his selections for several Cabinet secretaries on Monday. These appointees will play key roles in managing state government once he assumes office next month.

Included in the list of 11 state agencies is former North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) President Dr. Devdutta Sangvai, who has been picked to lead the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Sangvai served as NCMS president in 2013 and has also been a member of the Board of Directors and an NCMS Foundation Trustee. He is currently vice president for population health management at Duke University Health System. Additionally, he is a professor of family medicine, pediatrics, and psychiatry at the Duke University School of Medicine, as well as a professor in the Program in Education at Duke University.

“Having worked with Dr. Sangvai for many years, I am thrilled at his selection to lead the Department of Health and Human Services,” said NCMS CEO Chip Baggett. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience to this role. I am confident he will uphold North Carolina’s strong tradition of providing excellent health services to residents, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to congratulation Dr. Sangvai to this new position!” — Chip Baggett, NCMS CEO
